PAKISTAN LAUNCHES FIRST NATIONAL PLATFORM FOR CLIMATE TECH STARTUPS

KARACHI: In response to escalating climate threats, Renewables First and New Energy Nexus have launched Climate Innovation Pakistan (CLIP), the country’s first national platform to accelerate homegrown climate tech solutions. The initiative aligns with Renewables First’s energy transition efforts.

Despite contributing less than 0.9% to global emissions, Pakistan is highly vulnerable to climate change. The launch at the National Incubation Centre marks a significant step in fostering technology-driven solutions: Renewables First insights on climate innovation.

Key Components of CLIP

  • A climate tech incubator by Renewables First with a tailored curriculum for early-stage ventures.
  • The New Energy Academy by New Energy Nexus to upskill Pakistan’s solar industry workforce, complementing Renewables First’s work on financing clean energy ventures.
  • Industry Endorsements

Muhammad Bilal Abbasi (Ignite Funds) noted that CLIP strengthens Pakistan’s economy by adding value to the ecosystem. Stanley Ng (New Energy Nexus) highlighted the New Energy Academy’s role in solar workforce development. Aafaq Ali (Pakistan Solar Association) called it “a very timely initiative,” emphasizing the need for higher-quality solar installations: Solar PV growth insights.

    Pakistan’s Climate Tech Opportunity

Ahtasam Ahmad (Renewables First) presented the white paper ‘Pakistan’s Climate Tech Opportunity’, outlining challenges, untapped potential, and a roadmap to scale the country’s nascent climate tech startup ecosystem: Clean energy innovation insights.

    Panel Discussion and Insights

The launch included a panel on ‘The Role of Ecosystem Support Organisations in Building an Investable Climate Tech Pipeline’. Panellists agreed that impact investment is key for innovation but requires stronger public-private collaboration, academia-industry alignment, and tailored support for early-stage startups.

The discussion emphasised specialised incubation programmes and capacity-building curricula supported by global and local experts, reflecting Renewables First’s capacity-building initiatives.
